The Disco Biscuits Return to Times Square for Another Highly Anticipated New Years Run [Preview]

It's been a magnificent year for the Disco Biscuits and their team. Since the beginning of it, their shows have continuously gotten tighter while staying explorative and balanced. The jamtronica pioneers from Philadelphia have proven to fans, old and new ,that they are here to stay. It’s as if they've caught a second... Well, third wind. They went into 2015 with a notable New Years Eve run and they’ll go out of it the same way; with imaginative, idealistic set-lists and exceptional execution. Their last two runs were especially good. The band performed at a high level during their Halloween run and they performed at an even higher level at Dominican Holidaze. The 20th anniversary of the Disco Biscuits has proven to be an extended celebration of the legendary trance-fusion kings. I think I speak for everyone when I say that I can't wait to see how the Biscuits finish off 2015, and start 2016!

12/31/14 @ Best Buy Theater in New York City

The Disco Biscuits aren’t strangers to finding solid openers for their shows; they’ve been breaking new artists into the scene for years. On 12/30 they got fan favorite Horizon Wireless, the DJ/drummer duo will kick off the four-night run with hard-hitting beats to ease everyone into party mode. Consider The Source, the power trio from Brooklyn will get the celebration started on New Year’s Eve. A relatively new band on the scene, Animus Rexx will keep the party going on New Years Day, I can’t wait to see what they bring to the stage. They’re definitely going to gain some new fans.  SoulClap, the electro-funk duo will open on January 2nd, catering their unique brand of dance music to fans on the fourth and final night of the run. Not only did the Biscuits get awesome opening acts for all four nights, they also decided to spice things up with a few special sets. The band invited the Philly Stray Horns to join them for a another set of Biscuits-N-Horns. Some people aren’t crazy about the idea of trance-fusion with horns but they’re going to blow people away. If Halloween was an indication of what’s to come, everyone's in for a serious treat. The band is also bringing back The Wheel, which will be filled with the band’s favorite songs and spun by fans to decide what gets played next. Last but not least, the band will pick one set-list that’s written by a fan and play it to the best of their ability. There will be one special set a night a long with one set of pure, uncut trance-fusion in it’s rawest form. When will the sets take place? It’s a surprise. Halloween at the Crouse Hinds Theater in Syracuse was one of the most spectacular shows I’ve ever been to. It was packed to the brim and the energy was through the roof. The addition of the Philly Stray Horns and singer Alita Moses showed fans that the Disco Biscuits had been practicing and they’re all having a good time. The two things that every Biscuits fan wants to hear about the band they love most.  Although I wasn’t at Holidaze, I vicariously lived through my friends that were there. Sitting at my computer, I got daily reports from a wide array of trusted sources. Everyone said that the Biscuits were throwing down one top-notch set after another. The set-lists were tasteful yet unrestrained. By the time they finished their final set I was eager and ecstatic, all I could think about was four nights of high caliber Biscuits in the city I was born in.  After a stellar week of deep grooves and marvelous weather, the Disco Biscuits are back home and I know they feel the same way. The Disco Biscuits have accomplished a lot since their humble beginnings at the University of Pennsylvania in 1995. A lot has changed since then but a lot has stayed the same; they still push themselves and each other to take risks, bringing old songs to new levels. Their fans are both loyal and a little crazy, taking a page from the fan bases of bands like the Grateful Dead and Phish, while also bringing an original tri-state vibe to the table. It’s no secret that the Disco Biscuits combined two worlds of music, the hippie jam band scene and urban rave culture. By doing so they created a new genre with a new breed of fans. They were visionaries who saw the future of the music scene and seized the opportunity to do something new and original. Many critics predicted that they would fail and eventually break up; fast-forward twenty years, through ups and downs, the Disco Biscuits are one of the biggest bands in the live music scene. It’s been a wild ride and it’s far from over.

There are few bands that can do what the Disco Biscuits do. There aren’t many bands that constantly push the envelope like them. It’s true, their music isn’t necessarily for everyone and sometimes their style of playing can miss its intended mark. Their enormous musical risks don’t always pay off, but when they do they provide an alleviated platform for four talented musicians to create sensational improvisation. This year has collectively surpassed the past four. The band is rejuvenated and ready to go. They get reinvigorated every time they play a show that’s better than the last one. Bands come and go all the time, many musicians tour until their personal lives are in shambles. The road can be a cold and unforgiving place; it seems like you realize it more and more as you get older. That’s why I respect the Disco Biscuits' decision to do things their way - these destination runs have recharged the batteries of the band without burning them out. Not only are they getting along on and off the stage, they're having fun playing together. It’s not hard to tell that this is what's currently working for them. Down the road we’ll see what happens but for now let’s be grateful with what they’ve been giving us.  There is a great deal of promise on the horizon, the Disco Biscuits and their fans know it. This New Year’s Run at Playstation Theater is only going to add coals to the fire. There’s no denying it. I can’t wait to be underneath the streets of Manhattan, cutting up the dance floor with my best friends and favorite band. This magnificent year may be coming to an end but I’m sure the Disco Biscuits will pick up right where they left off.
